What is synthetic methane?

Synthetic methane is a renewable gas produced using an industrial process: methanation.

It combines carbon dioxide with hydrogen to give a synthetic gas. This technique can also be used to recycle CO2 released in the production of biomethane, for example. In that situation, methanation provides an opportunity both to double the output of a methanisation plant, and to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.
