What is the H2med project?

The H2med project is a transnational corridor that aims to connect the hydrogen networks of the Iberian peninsula to those in North-Western Europe. The aim is to enable Europe to be supplied with renewable, affordable hydrogen by 2030.

The project was launched in October 2022 by the President of the Spanish government, the French President, and the Portuguese Prime Minister, with the support of the European Commission. It is being led by the transport grid managers (GRTs) in those countries: Enagás, GRTgaz, REN, Teréga and OGE, which joined the project in October 2023.

H2med was selected from a list of projects of common interest (PCIs) / projects of mutual interest (PMIs) published by the European Commission in the Official Journal of the European Union on 8 April 2024.

This future network of 703 km of pipelines fits perfectly with the decarbonisation and energy sovereignty objectives set out in the European RePowerEU plan, since it could carry around 2 million tonnes of green hydrogen a year, which is 10% of estimated European consumption in 2030.
